Tempe artist Melissa Martinez was influenced by her installation’s location, where children’s classes take place. Taking into account that the space is also across from a busy bar, she sought to use motion to attract the attention of people coming and going.
Drawing inspiration from nature is a pattern in her work, and in this case, she merged that approach with inpsiration from her 19 month old son’s passion for bubbles and balloons. Bubbles and ballons brought jellyfish to mind, leading Martinez to create this eye-catching whimsical installation of bobbing, floating creatures.
This artwork was commissioned by City of Glendale Public Art.
