Installation Details

Shari Keith is an artist who uses found and discarded objects to create art.  She calls herself The Junk Lady because she collects junk, decorates her house with junk, and wears only clothing that is recycled and re-purposed. She is particularly interested in looking beyond an item’s intended use to explore its form, texture and compositional potential.  Her 10-panel installation in the main lobby of the Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center in Glendale, Arizona is created entirely from found and re-purposed items.

At first glance the work is a geometric study in black, silver and red, but upon closer inspection the viewer will discover that the items used in each compositional arrangement represent the people who use the center and the myriad activities that take place there.  When artist Shari Keith toured the Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center in Glendale, she saw a wide age range of people engaged in a wide variety of activities.  Her first impression was that it was a place with a lot going on.

This artwork was commissioned by City of Glendale Public Art
