Big Head Day

Nathaniel Lewis has always had a peculiar outlook on life. As an artist he enjoys making work that is provocative, but accessible.  He goes out of his way to give the viewer something layered, humorous and something they can identify with.  Big Head Day is a playful portrait of the city of Phoenix from the point of view of the Sun. The Phoenix Metro area is a man-made island which exists as a sheer force of will. As an ambivalent, omnipresent feature, the Sun resides over a landscape of almost nature: ephemeral things, permanent things, natural things and artificial things, all working together to make up a city. Big Head Day is a celebration of the strangeness of living in the desert.

This artwork was commissioned by City of Tempe Public Art
