Reticulation

by Malena Barnhart

The Arts at Marshall Square
7077 East Main Street
Scottsdale, AZ 85251

On view through December, 2016

Reticulation features a vibrant collage created from repurposed girls’ stickers. Thousands of tiny stickers form an intricate network of lines in this large-scale rendering of a spider web. In contrast to the subtle, transparent examples found in nature, this web has a bright, decidedly feminine color palette. As a disposable form of mass-culture ephemera, stickers might not immediately come to mind as a viable art material. Stickers are more likely to be spotted on the notebooks of tween girls than the walls of an art gallery. In Reticulation, this kitschy material is allowed to live a second life as a natural marvel.

This installation was commissioned by Scottsdale Public Art through the IN FLUX initiative in cooperation with The Arts at Marshall Square.
